How can I get the best out of my employees?

Companies continually struggle to keep up to date with and feel they are being stifled by the amount of employment legislation being passed. If you employ people then you need to ensure that you comply with ongoing employment law changes and requirements.

Whatever your Human Resources requirements are, whether they be questions on employment law, compensation and benefits, recruitment and performance improvement, our support team can help.

What is the best way to control all aspects of H&S in my business?

To help businesses comply with duties under health and safety law, our team of health and safety advisors can undertake an initial consultation to assess controls in place. Using the information obtained, we can then compile a comprehensive Safety, Health & Environmental Management System in accordance with HSG 65 Successful Health and Safety Management which was prepared by the HSE as a practical guide for directors, managers, health and safety professionals and employee representatives who want to improve health and safety in their organisations.

Do my policies need to be documented?

Any business that employs five or more people is legally required to have an up-to-date Health and Safety policy. The Health & Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974 also says that the policy must be regularly reviewed and revised, and must be brought to the attention of all employees.

What is a pre qualification assesment & why do I need to complete one?

The Pre qualification process can help both the employers and the company wishing to tender for the project. It is essentially a way for the company wishing to tender, to ensure and display their competence and capabilities to carry out the works needed.

How can I assure the competence of my site-based workforce?

For basic construction trades, such as bricklayers, carpenters and painters and decorators, the achievement of an NVQ (or SVQ in Scotland) Level 2 qualification or higher will assure a level of competence in line with the requirements of CDM 2007.

The CITB –CSCS Health and Safety Test, a computer based multiple choice test which tests a basic level of health and safety knowledge, provides a good way of ensuring that new entrants have a threshold knowledge of health and safety. In other sectors, schemes such as the two-day CCNSG course in the Engineering Construction Sector provide an equivalent mechanism.

Possession of a CSCS card does mean that the individual has achieved a recognised level of competence, but employers need to be careful that the trade or work occupation on the card matches the work activity to be carried out, and that the actual level of experience and training of the individual is sufficient.
